Service Description

What Is AKC Fit Dog? The AKC Fit Dog program is a program developed by the American Kennel Club and taught by AKC Fit Dog instructors. You will learn proper form and safety while doing various fitness exercises to improve your dog’s balance, flexibility, stamina, and overall body fitness. Improvements in these areas can help prevent future injuries, while dog and owner have fun training with positive reinforcement-based methods at the same time! Attending our FIT DOG six-week course makes your dog eligible for points towards their AKC FIT DOG titles too! Skills Taught include: Tuck sit Nose touch Front paw targeting Shake a paw Cookie stretch Kick back stand Spin left/right Fold back down Cavaletti poles Pivot rear legs We will also discuss the basics of assessing lameness and soreness in your dogs. Required Items For Class: Make sure you have your items for class ordered in advance! If you are unable to order the items, I will have some available to use. I am absolutely happy to make found household objects work when appropriate/possible. Fitness work is often inaccesible price wise and I want to help people understand ways to be creative with equipment. Balance Pad (XL Size - any color, though dogs can see the color blue well.) (Example: https://a.co/d/5k29Rws) Found object alternates: crate pad/egg crate foam, orthopedic dog bed, any object with soft slightly unpredictable motion. Four, Six, Eight, or Twelve Cavaletti Poles for Dogs (Four is the minimum required.) (Example: https://a.co/d/5sXvkYr) Seriously PVC poles propped on textbooks, bricks, tupperware or whatever is totally fine. Two Rubber Feed Bowls (Example: https://a.co/d/ec9QxCV) Found object alternates: large tupperware, buckets, storage bins, thick text books Regular well-fitted flat collar or Balance Harness (example: https://a.co/d/5k29Rws) Regular 5 to 6-foot leash Low profile dog bed or mat High-Value Treats My health is not always the best, so there is always the possibility that I may need to push out a week of class due that. Additionally, since class is held during warmer months, if the temperature gets about 90* class will be pushed out. I will reach out to all participants if the temperature is scheduled to get between 80-90*. This potentially means you initial end date of class may push out a week or two. No class on May 26 because I am out of town and no class June 23 because I will hopefully have young puppies at that time.
